Sisters of the Past

Sister Monica Elizabeth Neads

Profiled June 2013

19 September 1856 18 May 1923

Elizabeth Neads was born in Sydney New South Wales on 19 September 1856.

She entered the Sisters of St Joseph in Whanganui on 31 May 1885, and on her profession day of 11 April 1887, she took the religious name of Monica.

Sister Monica was one of the founding Sisters in Otaki in 1894.  The other founding Sisters were Irish Sisters Catherine Lafferty, Bridget Matthews and Magdalen Malone.  All were in their twenties or thirties as they were part of a new Congregation founded only in 1880.
The Maori mission and the school in Otaki needed reviving, and they were there due to the insistent request from the Parish priest, Fr Melu.  They arrived to an enthusiastic welcome from the Parish priest and people, and this included a picnic on Pukekaraka Hill, sports and races.  The convent was not ready and they boarded for some months with the D’Ath family.

Sister Monica died on 18 May 1923, and was buried at Heads Road Cemetery, Whanganui.
