Sisters of the Past

Sister Ignatius Alicia O’Hara

Profiled May 2013

30 November 1970 9 January 1928

Alicia O’Hara was born on 30 November 1870.

She entered the Sisters of St Joseph on 26 January 1893.  On 31 January 1895, she was professed as Sister Ignatius.

Little is known of where Sister Ignatius taught, but Otaki Parish records, a letter written by her from Otaki, and her burial place, indicate that she spent some years in Otaki.

On 7 January 1926, Sr Ignatius was elected Mistress of Novices by the General Council.  It is recorded in June 1927 that Reverend Mother and Council were concerned for Sr Ignatius’ health.  The reports from x-rays were ‘not good’ with little indication of what those health problems were.

There is a letter written by Sr Ignatius from Otaki on 28 December 1927 to Sister Monica McLeod on the occasion of the renewal of Sister Monica’s vows.  She asks for prayers and says she does not expect to get better.

On 9 January 1926, Sr Ignatius died at the age of 57 years.  She was buried on Pukekaraka Hill in Otaki.
