Sisters of the Past

Sister Camillus Florrie Goldfinch

Profiled May 2013

1882 19 April 1929

Florrie Goldfinch was born in Gisborne in 1882.  She is known to have had at least two brothers and two sisters.  Her family was later well known in the Ohakune area.

Florrie entered the Sisters of St Joseph in Whanganui on 6 March 1902 and was professed on 20 January 1904 taking the religious name of Camillus.

Sister Camillus taught in the schools in Hastings, Hawera, Patea, Manaia, Feilding, and St Mary’s Whanganui.  It was while she was at St Mary’s that she suffered her untimely death on 19 April 1929, having only celebrated the Silver Jubilee of her religious Profession the year before.

Requiem Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel and a report in the local newspaper stated:
‘the music of the Mass was most devotionally rendered by the Sisters and boarders.  The chief mourners were two brothers and two sisters of Sister Camillus.  At the Cemetery the Brothers’ pupils and the pupils of St Mary’s Convent formed a guard of honour.'

Sister Camillus was buried at Heads Road Cemetery, Whanganui.
