Sister Anthony - Mary Coghlin

Profiled April 2013

28 January 1876 12 June 1937

County Cork in Ireland was the birthplace of Mary Coghlin on 28 January 1876.

Mary entered the Sisters of St Joseph in Whanganui on 15 January 1898.  She was professed as Sister Anthony on 17 January 1900.

Sisters later recalled Sister Anthony as ‘a lovely gentle Sister who always seemed very amiable and virtuous.  She was generous and lovely to live with’.  Sister Leonard Mischewski remembers growing up in Ohakune when   Sister Anthony was in the community there.  Anthony would give the children dates filled with icing sugar which they loved, when they took produce to the Convent door.

Sister Anthony died on 12 June 1937. She was buried in the Heads Road Cemetery, Whanganui.
