Sisters of the Past

Sister Winefred Jessie Chisholm

Profiled February 2013

5 July 1879 31 October 1945

Scotland was the birthplace of Jessie Chisholm on 5 July 1879.

Jessie entered the Sisters of St Joseph on 4 February 1897 and was professed on 4 January 1901, taking the name of Winefred.  She became a teacher and also taught singing at Sacred Heart in later years.  She was remembered as a very straight forward person.

In 1902 Winefred was missioned to Manaia in Taranaki, from 1929 to 1933 she taught in Hawera, and in 1938 to Levin.  She went to Hastings in 1939 until 1944 and was remembered as being quite sickly at that time.

Winefred suffered a stroke while in Hastings and was cared for by the Sisters there before being brought back to Whanganui where she died on 31 October 1945.

Requiem Mass was celebrated in Sacred Heart Chapel and Sister Winefred was buried at Aramoho Cemetery.
