Sisters of the Past

Sister Bertrand Mary Herlihy

15 February 1889 16 December 1955

Profiled November 2012

15 February 1889 was the birthdate of Mary Herlihy to Margaret nee Brownlie, and Denis Herlihy.  The place of her birth was Whanganui.

Mary entered the Sisters of St Joseph on 10 April 1912, and was professed on 23 January 1914 as Sister Bertrand.

Sister Bertrand taught primary classes in Hawera (twice), Patea, Hastings, and in Whanganui.  She was teaching at Villa Maria when it was required for the new St Augustine’s College for boys.  St Monica’s School was the replacement primary school for the Villa, and Bertrand moved there with her pupils.   Sisters recall Bertrand as very sincere and kind, but she suffered from anxiety.  For the latter reason she spent a year in hospital in 1936.

In 1955 Bertrand returned to Sacred Heart Convent in Whanganui, and died during an operation in Braemar Hospital.  Mass of Requiem was celebrated in Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, and she was buried in Aramoho Cemetery Whanganui.
