Grace Lafferty was one of three sisters who all entered the Sisters of St Joseph in its relatively early history.

Grace was born to Grace, nee McCafferty, and her husband John in Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland on 24 June 1872.  She is known to have had two older sisters, Hannah and Sarah, and a brother Charles, who later lived in Hamilton.  Their father was a farmer, and in 1876 the family emigrated to New Zealand.

On 10 January 1891, Grace entered the Sisters of St Joseph in Whanganui, joining her two sisters who were community members.  Hannah, now Sister Catherine, had entered the Sisters in 1882, and Sarah, now Sister Michael, had entered in 1886.   Catherine had been the third woman to enter the Sisters from New Zealand just two years after their arrival in Whanganui.
Grace was professed as Sister Francis on 15 August 1892.

Sr Francis is known to have taught in many primary schools of the Sisters including Levin and Feilding, Waipawa and Waipukurau, Patea and Waverley.

On 21 June 1958, Sr Francis died in Whanganui.  Her Funeral was held in the Sacred Heart Chapel and she was buried at Aramoho Cemetery.
