Naseby, Central Otago, was the birthplace of Cecelia, to Jane nee Hanrahan, and Timothy Buckley, on 1 February 1891.  Timothy was an electrical engineer from Australia.

Cecelia entered the Sisters of St Joseph in Whanganui on 8 September 1912.  She was professed as Sister Bernadine on 23 January 1914.

Bernadine became a music teacher and this ministry took her to Josephite Convents around the lower North island.   She was stationed in Hawkes Bay in Hastings and Waipukurau, in Taranaki at Manaia twice, and in Horowhenua in Otaki and Levin.
A brother of hers became a priest in the Society of Mary.

Bernadine was became quite ill in her early religious life and spent several years leading an invalid’s life at St Mary’s in Whanganui.  This with her poor eyesight meant her general health was not good during her life.  She did however become a dedicated music teacher.

Bernadine died in hospital at Waipukurau on 10 August 1969.  Mass of Requiem was celebrated in St Joseph’s Parish Church there, and she is buried in the Waipukurau Cemetery.
