Yvonne McKeegan was born on 9 January 1920 in Hastings.  Her parents were Francis and Annie, nee Brady.  She had three sisters – Billie (Mrs Page), Aileen (Mrs Gallagher) and Lorna who is thought to have died young.

Yvonne entered the Sisters of St Joseph in Whanganui on 24 January 1937, and was professed as Sister Helen on 17 January 1940.

Sister Helen taught as a primary school teacher at Holy Infancy School in Whanganui for three years, but her skills in music were recognised and from then on she became a music teacher.  Her ministry took her to convents in Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Whanganui and the Horowhenua regions.  She was a dedicated teacher, an outstanding cook, and a perfectionist in life.  She continued teaching until ill-health took its toll in the 1960’s.  She asked to move to Hastings, where she died on 26 November 1971.

Her funeral was held in the local Sacred Heart Parish Church, and she is buried in the Hastings Cemetery.
