‘Show me the way to go home’ October 2012

On Sunday 28 October 2012 at the 10.30am Mass, the Johnsonville Parish fare-welled a much loved parishioner, Sr Josepha O’Connor, who had lived and served in the parish for 18 years.

The Mass prepared by the Youth Group, Challenge 2000, was centred on the gospel theme of ‘Go, your faith has made you well.’ They re-enacted the theme, and continued it with the story of the founding of the Josephite Sisters by Fr Julian Tenison Woods and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, and their outreach to the poor and needy.

After Mass, the work of Josepha at Arohata Women’s Prison, her involvement in many and various parish ministries, her open home for parish group meetings and her support of Challenge 2000 were emphasized by all the speakers.  Gifts and words of thanks and praise were given her for her generosity and openness, and her total involvement in the parish of St Peter and Paul.  As Archbishop John Dew was in Rome, a letter was read from Josepha’s nephew, Monsignor Gerard Burns, on his behalf.

In Josepha’s response she said that the best experience of her 18 years in Johnsonville was being part of the parish community, a multi-cultural, exciting and happy parish, blessed with the youthfulness and enthusiasm of the Challenge 2000 members.

She said she felt it was time to return to the Sisters’ hearth-place of Whanganui, and thanked the Sisters who had come to the Mass to ‘show her the way to go home!’
