Celebrating our Centenarian April 2012

A great day was had at Mt St Joseph on 28 April to mark a very special occasion the 100th birthday of Sister Justin Collins, and about 60 of Justin’s Sisters and friends gathered with her.  The time started with a blessing prayer followed by a Power Point which showed the progress of Justin’s life through photographs.  In response to this all present joined in the singing of Handel’s Alleluia Chorus at the request of Justin.  The cutting of the birthday cake and singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ flowed into afternoon tea with a lot of mixing, mingling and chatting.

Sr Justin, born Aileen Collins on 28 April 1912, grew up and had her schooling in Whanganui at Holy Infancy School, St Vincent’s Castlecliff, and Sacred Heart College.  After her father died, her mother took on house-keeping duties for Mr Moore, owner of Bushy Park near Whanganui. It was from there that Justin entered the Sisters of St Joseph, being professed in 1933.

During her long primary and secondary teaching ministry Justin was stationed in many of the Josephite Schools around the lower North Island.  As well as her classroom teaching, Justin was a teacher of Music, Speech, and Drama, and was involved in producing musicals at Sacred Heart College.  In later years she spent a year with the Sisters of St Joseph in Tasmania, and 2 years as receptionist at the Catholic Nunciature in Wellington.  She now lives at Nazareth Rest Home in Whanganui.
