MUSEUM EXHIBITION    JULY 2011

‘Sisters of St Joseph Catholic Primary Education in Whanganui 1880 – 1988’ is the title of a new exhibition at the Whanganui Regional Museum.  The exhibition was formally blessed and opened on 7 July with a gathering of Sisters, friends, and Museum staff.

The new Museum Director Dr Eric Dorfman opened the proceedings followed by Anne Burke rsj who welcomed all to the occasion.  Helen Doyle rsj gave an overview of the display and an explanation of how it came about.  Her words were followed by the waiata, ‘Whanganui’.  Sr Justin rsj, now in her 100th year, prayed the blessing loudly and clearly to close the formal part of the proceedings.

Also in attendance were those who had provided their treasures for the display.  These included hand written references, art and craft work, items of school uniforms.  All present took the time to look at the many photographs, registers, reports, as well as some artifacts from early classrooms.  Another feature was the audio corner where one could listen to Sisters’ singing, piano playing, and reminiscences from former pupils and teachers.

The afternoon concluded with afternoon tea served by the Museum staff in the classroom below.
