Honouring our Dead 2 November 2010

This year All Souls Day in Whanganui was marked by a rather special unveiling.  Local Sisters gathered at Aramoho Cemetery where a new stone was unveiled showing the names of 27 Sisters of St Joseph and the places outside of Whanganui where they are buried.

Most of these Sisters are interred in Hastings or Otaki, with others in Waipawa, Waipukurau, Hawera, Patea, Taupo, Ohakune, Taihape and Levin cemeteries.
The stone is in the same material as the other gravestones, just a little larger to accommodate the names.

The stone was blessed, and then Sisters read out the names and shared their memories of those whom they knew.  A piece of rosemary for remembrance was placed for each name.  A litany of remembrance, song and blessing completed the meaningful ceremony.
