CENTENARY OF MARY MACKILLOP'S DEATH - 8 Aug 2009

To celebrate this special milestone, the Josephite Sisters of both branches in this country with their Josephite Associates, gathered for the weekend at Mission Bay in Auckland.

The Whanganui Sisters were warmly welcomed with a powhiri in the main foyer of MacKillop Centre, and were presented with a painting of Mary and a book about her life.

As well as the opportunity to spend time with one another, an invitation had been made to Sr Virginia Bourke rsj of Lochinvar  to share her knowledge and insights on the early history of the order founded by Mary MacKillop.  The ‘story of the monogram’ dealt with our commonalities and the difficulties of our early history very honestly and gently.  Virginia’s challenging  input was both informative and entertaining.

The actual day of Mary’s anniversary was highlighted in a Celebration of the Eucharist at St Michael’s Remuera a parish which Mary had been part of when she was in NZ.  The gathering of Josephite Sisters, family, friends and former pupils, was joyous and meaningful.  Bishop Dennis Brown, a former Josephite pupil, presided, and was joined by other clergy, while Josephite Associates, various ethnic groups and children of the local school took their parts also.

Later, a centenary dinner and an evening of fun and entertainment back at MacKillop Centre, gave the day an appropriate ending.

Following a last session from Virginia on the Sunday morning, a prayerful poroporoaki  (farewell) was held and the Whanganui Josephites left with their hostesses a ceramic piece featuring two koru fronds unfurling together symbolising the two branches of Josephites who came to Aotearoa-New Zealand in the 1880’s and have been living out their Josephite vision and ministries ever since.
