New home for Statue - 19 March 2009

The statue of St Joseph which had stood on the lawn in the front of the main building of Sacred Heart Convent and College, now has a home in the grounds of St Marcellin School, Whanganui.

A former principal of the school, Michael Fitzgerald, with several enthusiastic workers, worked hard to make the new positioning of the large statue a reality in a newly created ‘Joseph’s Dell’ area of the playground.
On St Joseph’s Day, 19th March, St Marcellin School pupils and staff, Holy Family Parish parishioners, friends and Sisters gathered round the statue for a blessing and unveiling.
Visitors were welcomed by the school kapa haka group, speakers gave an insight into the history of the statue, the difficulties of the move, and the reminder it can be of Joseph’s qualities lived out today.  Fr Des Levins PP blessed the statue, and the assembled gathering.
All enjoyed morning tea, served by students from Cullinane College.

Present principal Mervyn Bloor, Fr Des Levins PP, Pupils Jordi Kotuhi-Brown and Sara-Jane Back, Sr Anne Burke rsj, and former principal Michael Fitzgerald before the statue.
