St Marcellin School Reunion - May 2008

The weekend of May 31 to June 2 was the date for a gathering at St Marcellin School in Whanganui to celebrate 25 years since St Anthony’s School, Gonville moved from York Street around to Totara St to complete an amalgamation with Marcellin.  (Marist Brothers and St Joseph’s Aramoho moved over in 1980).

Pupils, staff and friends of Marist Brothers, St Anthony’s, St Joseph’s (& Holy Infancy), and St Vincent’s Castlecliff, were welcomed to the weekend’s activities at a Get together on Friday evening.  Sr Marie Roche, previously Principal of St Anthony’s and a teacher at Marcellin, spoke of the Sisters of St Joseph’s ministry in Whanganui city and their involvement in the rationalization and amalgamation of the schools.  Brother Hilarion spoke on behalf of the Marist Brothers, and then present Principal Mr Mervyn Bloor spoke of today’s school.

The present St Marcellin School community formally welcomed the visitors on to the school grounds, and this was followed by cutting of the cake, morning tea, and decade photos.

A cabaret was held on the Saturday evening.  Sunday morning Mass was celebrated by Bishop Peter Cullinane.  Bishop Peter congratulated the school community and urged all to hold fast to the baptismal invitation to come to know Jesus Christ – the mission of all Catholic Schools.  Morning tea and farewells concluded the weekend’s gathering.
