Federation in Tasmania - April 2007

Sisters Marie Roche, Marlene Dunn, Marie Skidmore and Liz Hickey, members of the co-ordinating Team recently travelled to Tasmania for the 20th General meeting of the Australian-New Zealand Federation of the Sisters of St Joseph. This historic occasion had present for the first time members of the Leadership team of the Central Josephites along with representatives from every province of the Central Josephites.

The gathering began with a reconciliation ceremony, calling to mind a massacre of aborigines which occurred at Risdon Cove. Marie Roche is shown handing a gift to the Aboriginal Women at Risdon Cove, the place where members of the Moomairemener people were slaughtered on 3rd May 1804.

While in Tasmania, the Whanganui sisters took the opportunity to visit the grave of one of our founding sisters, Hyacinth Quinlan. After coming to Whanganui in 1880, Hyacinth left for Tasmania in 1891, where she died in 1933
