THE EARTH CHARTER - A Josephite Perspective - Sept 2006

September each year is a time for the Sisters to gather for one of their twice yearly weekend assemblies.  On Saturday 16 September, the group and friends welcomed Sister Mary Cresp of the Australia New Zealand Central Josephites to lead a seminar on the Earth Charter.  Mary was already known to many as the author of ‘In the Spirit of Joseph’ – an account of the multiple communities of Sisters of St Joseph worldwide.

The Earth Charter, approved in March 2000, was the product of world-wide consultation over many years.  Its mission is to establish a sound ethical foundation for the emerging global society and to help build a sustainable world based on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.

In her explanation of the basic principles of the Earth Charter, Mary was able to point out the close correlation between its basic principles and the characteristics of the Josephite charism.  The Charter’s call echoes much of the tradition and experience of the Josephite way of life, and challenges us to apply it to our lives today.
