Sacred Heart Complex for Sale - Feb 2004

The entire complex of Wanganui’s Sacred Heart College is now on the market.

The school closed in 2002 and last September the Sisters of St Joseph put about 1.2 ha of subdividable land at the St John’s Hill site up for tender. The Sisters planned to lease out the buildings.

However there had now been a change of direction and the entire 2.7ha site and buildings were for sale, the Sisters’ lawyer Richard Moore said yesterday. The property has a capital value of $3.24 million.

Obtaining the former Halswell Court Motel as the new home of the Villa Maria Hostel meant the Sisters were now in a position to sell the entire complex, Mr Moore said.

The Sisters had made a commitment to provide accommodation for Cullinane College boarders at the Sacred Heart site as long as required.
A complicating factor had been that the former hostel was in the middle of the grounds, limiting what could be sold, Mr Moore said.

Palmerston North real estate company Baileys is managing the sale process and tenders close on March 25.

The buildings include classrooms, hostel, administration block and most significantly the school’s chapel. The sale wouldn’t include any caveats, but all religious and sacred items would be removed from the property before the sale, including statuettes and the Chapels’ stained glass windows, Mr Moore said.

There were many possible uses for the building, which is zone residential. Baileys’ thought the site was ideal for an educational type college, he said. It was not extensively tenanted at the moment – small groups were using it for educational purposes.
