Significant Award - June 2004

Sister John Bosco Kendall, of the Sisters of St Joseph of Nazareth has received a Papal award.

The Benemerenti (Well Deserved) Medal and citation were presented to her by Bishop Peter Cullinane at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit at Palmerston North on 6 June 2004.

Such awards from the Vatican are not given lightly. John Bosco received the medal because Bishop Peter wanted to acknowledge her involvement in the development of Cullinane College.

Two others, the Vicar for Catholic Education in the diocese, Sister Muriel Kivell of the Sisters of the Mission, and Mrs Edda McCabe, who served on the Trust Board of Hato Paora College in Feilding, received medals at the same time. Both had given significant service to Catholic education in the diocese.

Sister John Bosco said she was far from the only one involved in the closure of the two colleges (Sacred Heart and St Augustines), the development of Cullinane College and relocation of Villa Maria Hostel.
"In both cases I was surrounded by a team of enthusiastic, committed people. It’s an award for them too, and for my own Sisters of St Joseph, who have supported me in a host of ways."
