New Site for Villa Maria - Feb 2004

Students arriving at Villa Maria Hostel on January 26 found buildings still being completed in their new hostel The purchase of Halswell Court Motels as a new home for the boarders from Cullinane College is the third hostel of that name in Wanganui.

The new Hostel is close to the College, and is home to 40 students, 16 boys and 24 girls, including 5 students from Wanganui High School.

A large building that was once a CD store in Palmerston North was moved on to the site in early December. It has been altered to provide kitchen, dining and recreational purposes for the Hostel. The units of the former motel have had kitchens taken out, beds and desks moved in, and each unit has an ‘en suite’ with toilet and shower.

The new Villa Maria, owned by the Villa Maria Trust, was officially opened on Sunday February 1st by Bishop Peter Cullinane. Students took part in the blessing of the buildings. Speakers at the function included Mrs Jill Pettis MP, Sister Catherine Shelton Sisters of St Joseph, Mr Tracey O’Brien Principal of Cullinane College, Mrs Sue Williams Chairperson of the Trust, and Bishop Peter. The MC was Sister John Bosco, Chairperson of the Hostel Development Committee.
