Jubilee Celebrations - Mar 2004

Saturday 20 March 2004 was a day of celebration for five Sisters of St Joseph.

For Sisters Veronica Rogers and Genevieve Greig it was a Diamond Jubilee – sixty years since their profession in January, 1944. Veronica’s ministry over the years has encompassed primary school teaching, care of boarders at Sacred Heart Convent and community work. For Genevieve, secondary teaching took up a major part of her life, and she was a former principal of Sacred Heart College. Her work as archivist for the Sisters was a feature of her ministry, and in her latter years she was librarian for the College.

Sisters Marie Terese Geor, Marie Hawkins and Catherine Ryan celebrated fifty Golden years since their profession in January 1954.

Marie Terese now resides in Otaki, and is involved in community work after a lifetime of primary school teaching and principalship. Marie Hawkins also taught in primary schools and as a principal, and also worked as secretary at Sacred Heart College. In more recent years Marie began Josophia Craft Shop in Wanganui. Catherine was a secondary teacher, principal of Sacred Heart College, and was also leader of the Congregation of Sisters for some years. She is now involved in community work in Lower Hutt.

The day of Jubilee began with a liturgy in the chapel at Mt St Joseph in Wanganui, where the jubilarians were joined by members of their families and the sisters. Following the liturgy, all gathered for a luncheon, interspersed with tributes to the jubilarians from the sisters.

Sister Genevieve was not well enough to attend the celebrations, but was kept in touch by many visitors.
