Celebrating 100 years - 27 April 2012

A highlighted day in the Nazareth calendar was the 27 April for Sister Justin Collins 100th Birthday one day before her actual birthday.

A special morning tea was held for her, where residents, staff and volunteers joined in wishing her joy.

The occasion started with a reading out of a brief synopsis of Justin’s life.  Tracing her time at school in Whanganui, and her living for a time at Bushy Park where her mother was on the staff through her life as a Sister of St Joseph.  As a Sister Justin taught in both primary and Secondary schools and was a music, speech and drama teacher.  When she retired from school teaching she spent time in the Catholic Nunciature in Wellington, before returning to parish work.  Failing health meant moving to Nazareth some 20 years ago, and in that time she has been an enthusiastic and active presence in the resident community.  Many residents have benefited from her ‘good-night’ calls, her wise conversation, and her love of a good joke.

Sister Justin was helped to open her cards and was delighted with those from the Queen, the Governor General, the Prime Minister, other Ministers and the Mayor.  The cutting of the large birthday cake was followed by a simple and meaningful blessing led by the pastoral Care team. Then it was time to enjoy the morning tea, be interviewed by the reporter from the local paper, and speak to as many as possible.

Sister Justin had the last word as she thanked everyone:”A very big thank you for the wonderful morning, and may God bless you, keep you well, and may you live as long as God wants you to.”
