Farewell to former Pastoral Carer May 2010

Residents, staff and volunteers of Nazareth gathered on Tuesday 11 May for a farewell to Anne Burke RSJ, who finished 16 years ministry at Nazareth.

An Autumn Liturgy began the afternoon.  This was led by Marie Skidmore RSJ, Nazareth Director, and Sue Trethowen, Pastoral Care, and various staff members participated.
Richard Moore, Member of the Congregational Trust Board, paid tribute to Anne’s involvement at Nazareth from being a member of various Nazareth Management Boards to the position of Chaplain which has now become Pastoral Care.
Angela Aspinall, Manager, and Noelene Landrigan RSJ, of the Sisters of St Joseph Leadership Group, both offered their reflections on Anne’s work and gave best wishes for the future.

Anne was presented with a beautiful piece of glassware, and to much laughter, a garden gnome, complete with its own solar light and gardening gloves to keep his patch of earth tidy!

In her reply, Anne emphasized that in her ministry at Nazareth the line from St Francis prayer: ‘it is in giving that we receive’ had been the case.  She felt blessed by the interaction she had had with many residents and staff over the years.
She spoke of the little liquidamber tree that was planted on the opening day at Nazareth in 1987, only to break in a storm.  A replacement tree was planted and the broken tree put in a sheltered corner surrounded by other trees.  Now 23 years later, the broken tree is bigger and healthier than the original.  She saw that as a metaphor for Nazareth where people in need of shelter and care come to be surrounded by the community and its care, and find themselves living in a rich fullness of life.

A beautifully baked and iced cake was pride of place at a delicious afternoon tea enjoyed by all.
