Ray's 100th birthday! - April 2009

April 1st 2009 marked 100 years of life for resident Ray McNeil.  Ray was born in Whanganui and spent his whole life in the city.  As a young man he volunteered for the local Fire Brigade and then spent 30 years on the permanent staff, becoming a Senior Fireman.

Ray has been a keen sportsman, and is still fit and active.  He was a active bowler, winning 10 Club titles, and now plays with the residents’ team.  He loved swimming and took part in the Bridge to Bridge race several times.  Boxing was another sporting interest, and Ray held the Welter-weight championship for Whanganui.

Ray is a happy character, and while he now finds playing his ukulele difficult, his smile and friendly manner bring joy to all who know him.  His cooking prowess is well known and he provided the peanut brownies for his birthday.

On the day, Ray’s family joined him at Nazareth before the family celebrations. Here Ray’s daughters Lynette, Jenny and son Kelvin, are shown with Ray and the piper who led him into the lounge for his morning tea.

The day after his birth day, the local Fire Service collected Ray and took him down to the Fire Station for morning tea.  Here he is shown with two of the Fire fighters.  Ray is holding a brass section of hose from the time when he was on duty.
