Winter Solstice - July 2008

30july2008.jpgPuanga Matariki - The Maori New Year – Winter Solstice – Midwinter, the celebrations at Nazareth this year began with a Fun morning and Dinner on the 20 June, to which Quinlan Court residents were invited.  This year the ancestral thread that was celebrated was the Scottish background of many residents and friends.  Tartan was much in evidence, and one resident looked grand in his kilt.

The morning activities reflected the Scottish theme with such games as ‘Knocking Nessie off the Loch’, ‘Tossing the Cabre’, and ‘Pot the Haggis’.   After the games were completed, all shared a mulled wine.

The haggis was then piped into the dining room by Whanganui District councillor Randhir Dahya, accompanied by residents led by Len Williams (left) and Pauline Kennedy (right) with Manager Angela Aspinall (far right).
A good hot meal, Scottish music and much chat and laughter completed the day.

The following week, the Puanga-Matariki Service was held in the Chapel.
This time of reflection was based on Matariki as a time for learning, a time for thanksgiving for gifts of harvest, and a time for planting and renewal.
