Ellen reaches another milestone

scan4.jpgShe's acknowledged as a woman ahead of her time, an environmentalist, an optimist and an inspiration to many people…now Ellen Lockett has turned 100.

Ellen's celebrated her 100 years over several days – the first surrounded by her extensive family and friends with a barbecue at the family home. “She once told me that simplicity, wholesome values and living close to nature is the key to longevity,” her daughter Lesley says. “Her home was surrounded by trees; she said they purify the air and create a peaceful environment.”

On the day of her birthday she was the centre of attention at Nazareth , as residents, staff, family and friends gathered. The family provided a beautiful big cake with the 100 candles, and Ellen managed to gather enough breath to blow them all out. The letter from the Queen, and messages from the Prime Minister, local MP and Minister for Senior Citizens were read out.

Ellen attributes her long life to good wholesome fun, “no drinking and smoking”(apart from the odd cigarette at Christmas and on her birthday) and her famous scones which were always a big drawcard at their home on Sunday nights.

“I feel quite good about it,” she says. “I ‘ve enjoyed every moment …practically.”
