Volunteers - Ordinary People, Extraordinary Contribution

During a drive for volunteers in the community, a local newspaper came up with an article on one of our Nazareth volunteers, Rosemary Hicks. We at the Rest Home are very well supported by a large group of active volunteers ably co-ordinated by Jo Broad.

rosemaryhicks.jpgNazareth Rest Home volunteer worker Rosemary Hicks said the residents are an inspiration to her.

"Despite their frailties they are prepared to give anything a go," she said. "They have a great sense of humour and so much wisdom. They have so much to give back." Rosemary felt the residents were her dear friends.

"It’s a wonderful rest home. When you walk in there’s a loving atmosphere. The residents are superbly cared for."

Rosemary said she helped with the craft, the making of jams and pickles, drives, picnics, shopping, a visit to the Whanganui Regional Museum, dances, a hangi and at fashion parades.

Short interdenominational services in the chapel were held once a month by chaplains and were "really uplifting."

She said she became interested in volunteer work at Nazareth when Val Armstrong, now retired, was nurse Manager there. Rosemary worked in health, on the administrative side, for many years.
