Nazareth Rest Home News

Opening of Aroha Wing

On a windy 21 February 2004, the new Wing, Aroha, and other alterations were blessed and opened at Nazareth.

Residents, staff, sisters, families and friends all gathered indoors. Apologies were received from MP’s Tariana Turia and Jill Pettis – both due to the recent floods.

The simple ceremony opened with a welcome on behalf of the Sisters from Barbara Cowan. Mrs Maudie Reweti-Logan, kuia-kaumatua for Nazareth then blessed the water from the Whanganui River, which was used for blessing the new areas. The blessings were carried out by three groups consisting of a resident, a staff member and a sister. At this time, Mrs Sylvia Hofman, Manager, explained to all present the nature of the alterations.

The new Wing was solemnly named Aroha by Sister Justin, our oldest sister and resident. Mrs Julie Ranginui, another kuia-kaumatua for Nazareth, then explained the depth of meaning of ‘aroha’, after which the hymn Te Aroha was sung by all.

Thanks were expressed by Colleen Woodcock on behalf of the sisters and the Board to BSM Architects and Jamie O’Leary Builders. Mention was also made of the those subcontractors who had been most thoughtful in their manner of working in the Home.

A kowhai tree was then planted by our two kuia despite the howling gales!

All enjoyed looking round the new aspects of the Home and afternoon tea together.

Mr Norman Hurn reads the blessing prayer at the new Main Entrance, accompanied by Care Manager Ingrid Johnson holding the candl,e and Sister Therese Devon ready to bless the area.
