NAU MAI HAERE MAIWelcome to the website of We are a group of Catholic women religious living and working in the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand in partnership with many others who share a common Josephite vision. Our first foundation and heart-place is in the city of Whanganui on the Whanganui River. Our story begins in Adelaide, South Australia in the 1860's. An English priest, Julian Tenison Woods, shared his vision with a young Australian of Scottish descent, Mary MacKillop. In 1880 Sisters Hyacinth, Joseph, Clare and Teresa left Perthville to begin the New Zealand branch in Whanganui in the central North Island. CELEBRATION OF FUSION 24 AUGUST 2013 After 132 years, the Sisters of St Joseph of Nazareth, Whanganui, are now fused with the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. PARISH CELEBRATION 25 AUGUST 2013 The usual Parish Mass for St Mary’s Church in Whanganui on Sunday 25th August had a bigger congregation than usual, as many visiting Sisters of St Joseph joined parishioners in thanksgiving. HERITAGE TOUR 25 AUGUST 2013 Following the Parish Mass on Sunday 25th August, two busloads of Sisters from near and far set off on a brief ‘whistle-stop’ tour of some of the significant places for the Whanganui Sisters within the city. KAIWHAIKI MARAE 25 AUGUST 2013 To complete a momentous weekend in the history of the Sisters of St Joseph in Whanganui, the two busloads of Sisters, both from Whanganui and further afield, were welcomed to Kaiwhaiki Marae on the Sunday afternoon. |
